Rachel Carter creates woven sculptural pieces using resistant materials such as Cast Bronze and Copper. Trained at The University of Derby in Applied Arts, she mixes her love of art and design with her passion for the environment. Inspiration for her work comes from geometric patterns found in flowers and plants and the English countryside. Nature creates beautiful fluid shapes and these find their way into Rachelís sculptures.

Every piece is hand worked by Rachel using a range of weaving techniques from Crochet to Basketry to Macrame, combined with Rachelís trademark swirl weave to create sculptures using one material in a continuous length. Weaving requires a process of reflective practice, using a range of hand weaving techniques to discover the correct process to produce the most effective results with each chosen material. This practice ensures that every creation is a unique, one-off piece that can only be woven by Rachel.

Her career began using mild steel combined with willow to create large sculptures with her most widely known sculpture The Willow Grand Sphere has been exhibited widely including the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and Kyiv Botanical Gardens. Although Rachel no longer works in willow, the techniques and processes developed with this material has transferred to other more resistant materials.

n 2013 Rachel became the first artist to weave in wax to create Bronze sculptures using the Direct Lost Wax Method and her Bronze Sphere now sits within the World Heritage Site, The Derwent Valley. Since then Rachel has been developing the wax weaving technique further to create new fluid shapes.
